All About Being a Nanny (Childminder)
The Nanny is a specialist working in the family’s home, responsible for all tasks related to care of the children. The nanny will serve as a loving, nurturing and trustworthy companion to children.
Family will employ the Nanny on a full-time, usually live-out basis (I some cases also live-in possible).
Qualification of a Nanny
A Nanny is usually a qualified NNEB (Nursery Examination Board - 2 year training course) or equivalent.
Shorter courses taken by girls at a training college are acceptable coupled with plenty of ''hands on'' experience. Also, girls who have worked in the child-care field for several years and who are experienced with children would be acceptable.

Duties of a Nanny
A Nanny will be expected to take complete charge of the children including all tasks related to the child's wellbeing and where necessary keeping a diary of the child's progress.
A Nanny should provide a full range of activities suited to the child's age and ability both inside and outside the house.
Here are some major responsibilities of a Nanny but it depends on the employer:
- Create a stimulating, nurturing, and safe environment for the children
- Supervise the children’s activities at all times
- Prepare meals and bottles for, and feed, the children
- Dress the children
- Lay down for naps and bedtime
- Bath the children
- Change diapers
- Potty training with the children
- Perform housework related to child care, including washing the children’s clothes, cleaning up after meals, tidying play areas, and washing bottles
- Teach the children good social manners
- Play with the children indoors and outdoors
- Arrange trips and playdates with the children’s friends, both ‘home and away’
- Support the children in their physical, emotional & mental development & education – such as reading books to little children, taking them to adventure playgrounds and helping older ones with homework/ prep.
- Plan and lead educational activities
- Discipline the children, when necessary
- Drive the children to and from activities
- Administer medicine to the children
- Babysitting if agreed
Benefits and Payment of a Nanny
Live- in Nanny
Live in nanny requires her own bedroom and bathroom (in some cases they may have to share the bathroom with the children). Occasionally separate accommodation is included as part of the nanny package. Childminder’s room should be furnished and have a television and DVD player, a desk and good storage space. House rules should be made clear from the start and also mentioned in the nanny's contract.
The nanny's food is provided and paid for by the employer.
Free time will normally be 2 full days but in some cases it may be 1 1/2 days with one full weekend in four free. However, time off varies from one job to another.
Baby-sitting is by arrangement with the family and paid separately.
Live in nannies are entitled to a minimum of 4-weeks paid holiday. National Bank holidays are given or additional payment is made. Holiday time is taken at a mutually agreed time. Some families agree holiday time using a combination of 2 weeks the Employer chooses and 2 weeks the Employee chooses.
If the family requires their childminder to come on holiday with them, then this must be discussed and agreed prior to employment commencement. All travels expenses, food and nanny’s weekly wage will also need to be covered by the employer.
Salaries will depend upon age, experience, and the duties involved and will range from £250 - £350 plus net per week. Please note those are only guide minimums. Each position is individually negotiated and more experienced live in nannies may command higher salaries.
Live-out Nanny
The employer of a daily nanny should provide her lunch during a normal working day. If the Nanny works overtime, is taken on holiday, breakfast and/or dinner should also be provided.
